70 yards of grass with fresh paint was on display Saturday morning at Kennesaw State’s practice facility at The Perch. The field marked “Field 7” sits across a bridge from The Perch and is home to the Owls’ scrimmages throughout Training Camp.
Under sunny, hot and humid conditions, KSU’s student-athletes and coaches stepped out on freshly cut grass as sounds of whistles from referees filled the air during the first scrimmage of the 2016 KSU Football Camp.

“I thought offensively we were able to move the ball early and then late the defense found a way to get some stops. Obviously, we are growing up and we are making some progress,” head coach Brian Bohannon said. “I think the big thing for our football team is to push through being a little tired and fatigued. We have to finish and that’s what we have to do at the end of practices.”
The longest play of the day came from senior RB Chaston Bennett, who took a pitch on third-and-short and sprinted past the defense for a 63-yard touchdown.
“The offensive line means a lot to me because we all have to depend on each other in order to have success,” Bennett said. “It’s really good to have everyone back and run behind that line. We have improved and have come out this season with great focus.”
Popping of shoulder pads and helmets were heard by spectators looking on through the fence at The Perch. The defense, which held opponents to just 13.7 points per game at Fifth Third Bank Stadium last season, had plenty of moments of playmaking highlights.
Two forced fumbles were recovered by sophomore DB Taylor Henkle and freshman DE Allen Johnson. They were forced by sophomore LB Anthony Gore, Jr. and freshman LB Bronson Rechsteiner, respectively.
“As a team, I feel like we improved and we got stronger today. We tried to pick ourselves up today and we need to bring the energy throughout the entire practice,” Gore, Jr. said. “I’m more comfortable this season and it’s a blessing to be here.”
